VARNA FREE UNIVERSITY BROUGHT TOGETHER INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS FOR A DISCUSSION ON GLOBAL ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS

10 June 2024

Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" hosted the International Scientific Conference "Economic Transformations in the Global World", which brought together nearly 50 participants from different countries and universities. The event, organised by the Faculty of Social, Economic and Computer Sciences, took place in the University's Educational and Sports Complex.

The main goal of the conference is to exchange ideas and propose solutions to problems on a global scale, said Prof. Anton Grozdanov, PhD, Dean of the faculty during the opening of the event. Among the topics covered are economic security under the conditions of global uncertainty, digital transformations and the role of artificial intelligence (AI).

Varna Free University was represented by 20 professors, 7 young doctoral students and 13 students. The plenary report on "The Changing Face of Globalization in the Digital Age" was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Eleonora Tankova, PhD, Vice-Rector of the University. According to Assoc. Prof. Tankova, digitization is currently changing societal processes, including the economy, politics, culture, labour markets and social relations.

Assoc. Prof. Tankova emphasised that digital globalization creates new inequalities in the world, and some countries will have extreme difficulties to catch up with the advanced ones. The problem is that technology is ahead of everything else and society has no chance to find the right solutions for process control. In the current volatile geopolitical situation, AI is the focus of all global forums as it poses a huge risk.

The new generation is quick to embrace technological change, but often uncritically. According to her, this is the biggest challenge for educational institutions, and conversations on the topic should start in kindergartens.

Grzegorz Wilk-Jakubowski and Dr. Artur Kochczynski from the University of Applied Sciences in Kielce, Poland, also participated in the conference with a report on "Financing Crisis Management". They pointed out that planning and preparing for crises is essential, especially after the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Many countries in Eastern Europe do not have sufficient resources to prepare for a crisis, which necessitates a response when crises have already occurred.

The forum provides an opportunity to exchange ideas and search for solutions to global problems related to economic security and artificial intelligence. Events like this contribute to the creation of regulatory frameworks and global efforts to address the challenges of the digital age.
