University and school students poured concrete and extinguished fires at the foyer of VFU

07 February 2019

During the initiative   "Construction Site - Builder Profession", leading industry companies scheduled several real job interviews.

The first edition of the practical workshop of the Varna Free University - "Construction Site - Builder Profession", aroused high interest. University and school students saw the secrets and challenges of the builder profession in practice, and students of Construction of Buildings and Structures received job offers in some of the largest construction companies. The aim of the initiative was to promote the profession of the builder, to meet the students of Construction of Buildings and Structues and Fire Safety and Population Protection and school students with leading representatives of the branch who offer real jobs "Since its foundation, Varna Free University carries into effect its educational model with its non-standard solutions and approaches to give students a better chance of realization in order to give them the chance to  have a successful professional career. Sustainable development is only possible on the basis of sustainable partnerships We are proud to see our successful students as partners of our partner companies today, and we are here to carry out our mission, and it is to create quality professionals who can handle non-standard tasks in practice and to relate business with science and education ", said at the opening of the event Yani Yanev - Vice President of VFU

"Lately, the profession of the builder has lost its attractiveness, especially among young people," said Assoc. Prof. Milena Kichekova, PhD, Head of the Department of Construction of Buildings and Structures at VFU.  On the other hand companies have a desparate need for qualified staff. Most of our students work. In today's meeting, those who work will have the opportunity to find even better jobs. Each of the companies has prepared a practical task related to the construction process so students have the opportunity to orientate which part of their process is more interesting for them for the future jobs. We do hope today's event to contribute to a return to the profession of the builder," added Assoc. Prof. Kichekova.
The young people who have chosen the profession of the builder learned about the main building processes and participated in some of them in the form of games and competitions. In the foyer of Varna Free University, concrete was poured, scaffolding and an elevated roof structure were built. An attractive demonstration showed some of the latest technologies for non-destructive analysis of structures. The students and lectureres of Fire Safety and Population Protection demonstrated how to act in a fire.
"We are here in our capacity as employers of specialists trained at VFU - said Tanya Penkova, Human Resources Manager of one of the leading construction companies in Varna. We are fascinated by the fact that there is such an event. Such forums should often happen. It may sound like a cliche that the industry really has an acute shortage of specialists. We are interested to have direct contact with the young people who are being trained. They have no information about the opportunities and information where they can pursue a career in Bulgaria, in Varna. We have selected our first students and have already scheduled the first interviews. The most valuable skills are gained in practice, and if curricula include opportunities for more practice, internships and contact with employers, they will be more prepared for the profession"- added Penkova.
"I have chosen the profession of the builder three years ago," said Esin Mehmedova, a third-year student of Construction of Buildings and Structures. I work in this field, but I am not yet a civil engineer. It is my dream. Varna has many areas where we see overbuilding, there is not enough space in the public open space between blocks and enough playgrounds for children, and I see the small family home above all as a cozy one with more greenery. "
"I want to study construction of buildings and structures," said Radoslav Radev, a 12-grade student of the Vocational Secondary School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy. His family is in the construction business and since he was a child he has been keen on this profession. He finds the organized construction site very useful. He plans to build modern and tall buildings.
