On 20 November 2019, the Portugal Ambassador to Bulgaria, HE Helena Margarida Rezende de Almeida Coutinho arrived for an official working visit to Varna Free University. The Portuguese diplomat was accompanied by Ms Anaisa Gordino - Director of Camoes Sofia - Institute for Cooperation and Language. The purpose of the visit of the Portuguese delegation to the university was to conclude a protocol of cooperation between the Camoes - Institute for Cooperation and Language and Varna Free University. The document sets out the terms and conditions for cooperation between the institute and the university in order to provide training opportunities for university lecturers and students in Portuguese language and culture.
During the official meeting between the Portuguese guests and the university management, the President of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” - Assoc. Prof. Krasimir Nedyalkov, PhD expressed his satisfaction that thanks to the joint efforts of the Embassy of Portugal in Sofia, Camoes Sofia - Institute for Cooperation and Language and the administration of the higher education institution, for the first time since the beginning of this academic year, training in Portuguese language and culture has been introduced in Varna educational centre. Assoc. Prof. Krasimir Nedyalkov, PhD emphasized that the guiding principle of the university is internationalization, which is why the university leadership welcomes the opportunity to learn another language, such as Portuguese.
In the course of the conversation Elena Coutinho said that Portuguese is not only a language that gives access to an interesting culture, it is becoming more and more used globally as it is already the fourth most spoken language in the world and provides students with wonderful career opportunities. At the end of the meeting, the President of the University presented to HE Elena Coutinho an honorary plaque of Varna Free University. The Embassy of Portugal and Camoes Sofia - Institute for Cooperation and Language donated materials and textbooks for the university's lecturers and students.
A Portuguese Culture Week is organized for yet another year because of the increased interest in the Portuguese language and culture in the city. From 25 to 30 November, the citizens and guests of the city will have the opportunity to visit various cultural events organized by the Embassy of Portugal and the Cultural Institute Camoes Sofia.
