THE INDEPENDENT SPACES OF VARNA AND TOKYO WAS A TOPIC COMMENTED BY THE STUDENTS IN ARCHITECTURE AT VFU "CHERNORIZETS HRABAR"

09 September 2021

Arch. Ivan Bonev from the Transformers Association held a two-day workshop with the participation of 2nd and 3rd year students majoring in Architecture at Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". Under his guidance, the students took part in the preparation of the "cobweb" - a parametrically designed rope structure, which will hold the exhibition and will remain there until September 25.

The exhibition "Networks of Independent Spaces: Tokyo" is held under the patronage of the Japanese Embassy in Bulgaria and is part of the 32 Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria. It is realized in partnership with Varna Free University. It tells the story of common urban spaces for fishing, farming, camping, cooking, children's play, clubs and neighborhoods in the world's largest metropolis. It describes a little-known image of Tokyo and presents the combination of architecture, usage, behaviour and management of single examples and networks of independent spaces.

A Discussion Forum with representatives of independent spaces and projects in Varna will be held on September 18 at 4 pm on site at the exhibition installation in the Sea Garden. Specialists and citizens will look for the points of contact between Tokyo and Varna. The forum will be divided into two parts:

- Presentation of selected independent spaces and projects in Varna by their members and external specialists.
- Open discussion on the challenges and potential for the sustainable development of the independent spaces in Varna.

The moderator will be Assoc. Prof. Arch. Plamen Petrov, PhD - Scientific Secretary of the Department of Architecture and Urbanism. The event will be attended by teachers and students from the Faculty of Architecture at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar".

The evening will end with a premiere screening for Varna of the documentary film "The Pit" / Die Grube (2019) by Hristiana Raykova.

"Networks of Independent Spaces" is a research done by arch. Ivan Bonev, developed between 2017 and 2019 in the laboratory of Professor Yoshiharu Tsukamoto at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The research was completed in the summer of 2020 together with the illustrator Victoria Paeva, architect Anton Kerezov and architect Veronika Boneva.
