14 May 2024

A public lecture on the topic "Family law challenges of the time" will be presented by Assoc. Prof. Maria P. Petrova, PhD - head of the Dpartment of Civil Law Sciences at the Faculty of Law of Varna Free University. The event will be held on 16 May 2024 at 12:00 in the Prof. Tamara Hinova Academic Courtroom (room 408).

In her public lecture, Assoc.Prof. Maria P. Petrova, PhD will present the development of family law through the prism of the latest legislative authorizations of traditional hypotheses, as well as the trends for the development of family law in Bulgaria.

Family law is facing a number of challenges of the time: the changed model of the family and the relationships within it, including its existence in and out of marriage, the convergence of Bulgarian legislation with the legislation of the European Union, the emergence of more and more specific hypotheses in family law relations - all this gives rise to the need for adequate legislative changes in the national legislation of Bulgaria. The main changes in the Family Code from 2020 and from 2023 impose new rules, hitherto unknown in our domestic legislation, and these, together with the new judicial practice, cause interest from both a theoretical and a practical point of view.
