THE CORPS OF WITNESSES FOR THE STATE AUTHORITIES WILL BE PRESENTED TO THE DIRECTOR OF THE MINISTRY OF THE INTERIOR - VARNA

21 February 2022

At the invitation of the Faculty of Law at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar", the director of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior - Varna Senior Commissioner Atanas Mihov and the head of the "Investigation" department of the RD of the Ministry of Interior - Varna Commissioner Ivan Ivanov will visit the university on February 22, 2022 at 2.00pm. They will receive a list of more than 30 students who wish to be involved as witnesses for the state authorities in the stage of a pre-trial investigation.

It was initiated by The Criminology Club, established at Varna Free University. The Club involves young people interested in investigation and forensics, who will assist law enforcement agencies in conducting investigative actions when there are difficulties in attracting witnesses for the state authorities.
The members of The Criminology Club, under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. D.Sc. Yonko Kunchev, developed a Handbook for witnesses for the state authorities. It sets out the rights and obligations, the nature and the procedural rules for conducting the investigation.

The Criminology Club was established last year on the initiative of students from Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". They also initiated and set up the Corps of witnesses for the state authorities - with those wishing to participate in the conduct of procedural and investigative actions - inspection, search, seizure, identification and investigative experiments. The members of the Club are well-trained, young and responsible people who have knowledge in the field of criminology and interest in the investigation in the pre-trial phase. All of them went through the first training - "Profiling of Unknown Perpetrators of Crimes", taught by Prof. D.Sc. Yonko Kunchev in 2021. This year the courses of the Faculty of Law involved almost twice as many students. Most of the participants are students majoring in Law, Protection of National Security and Psychology, as well as graduates of universities in Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, etc.

The meeting with the regional director of the Ministry of Interior is in the context of the good cooperation of Varna Free University with the Ministry of Interior. Many students who graduated from the Academy of the Ministry of Interior study at the university. Teachers from the Ministry of Interior are also involved in the educational process. A joint project for improvement and modernization of the educational infrastructure is being implemented by the Academy of the Ministry of Interior in partnership with VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar", The University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy and the Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior, funded by the Operational Programme "Science and Education for Smart Growth". The Academy of the Ministry of Interior and VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" will develop two new joint master's degree programmes, which open specialties needed on the labour market - "Protection of Human Rights" and "Counteraction to Cybercrime". Training will begin in the new academic year 2022/2023.
