STUDENTS READ WORKS IN BULGARIAN, RUSSIAN, ENGLISH, ARABIC, JAPANESE AND PORTUGUESE ON THE WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY

On World Book and Copyright Day – April 23, the traditional Reading Marathon was held at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar". The event was organized by the Department of Foreign Languages and Postgraduate Qualification and the University Library. This year, the Reading day at Varna Free University was dedicated to round anniversaries related to the birth of four world-famous authors of literary art: William Shakespeare – 460 years, Anatole France – 180 years, Alexander Pushkin – 225 years, Luís de Camões – 500 years, as well as Nikolay Haytov, an author popular in Bulgarian literature, 105 years.

Foreign and Bulgarian students, teachers and employees of the Varna Free University took part in the Reading Marathon. Wonderful works by world-famous authors were performed in Bulgarian, Russian, English, Arabic, Japanese and Portuguese.

As part of the solemn celebration of the World Book and Copyright Day, the Department of Foreign Languageс and Postgraduate Qualification organized and held a competition among students for the translation of literary texts (which have not been up to now translated into Bulgarian) from English and Russian into Bulgarian language. The Director of the University Library, Daniela Cherneva, awarded certificates and books to the winners and participants in the translation competition. Certificates and books were also given to all the other present students, teachers and staff who participated in the Reading Marathon.

On the occasion of Reading Day, the University Library prepared and presented to all its visitors an exhibition of books by the five authors to whom the holiday was dedicated.

Prof. Dr. Galina Shamonina, Dean of Student Life and Event Management at the university, congratulated the participants in the event, addressing them with the words: "This celebration of reading is very important not only because of the love for books, but also because the right and respect for the work of the authors of artistic texts, as well as for the respect for everything related to the observance of copyright. Reading is perhaps the most stimulating intellectual activity. It takes us far from home, but makes a home for us anywhere. If you read, you will have the necessary knowledge, emotion, culture and memory for something that happens to us not only on the pages of books, but also in life."

The director of the university library also welcomed the participants of the Reading Marathon and introduced them to the idea of the origin and the meaning of celebrating the World Book and Copyright Day. Assoc. prof. Dr. Dimitar Marinov led on the creative meeting with a brief presentation of the life and work of the five remarkable authors of literary works: William Shakespeare, Anatole France, Alexander Pushkin, Luís de Camões and Nikolay Haytov.


The Reading Marathon wrapped up with the words of Umberto Eco: “Libraries are fascinating places; sometimes you feel you are under the canopy of a railway station, and when you read books about exotic places there's a feeling of traveling to distant lands.”
