GRADUATES OF THE MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRESENT RESEARCH, RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND BUSINESSES

The first stage of the defence of the diploma theses of the students majoring in the master's degree programme in Circular Economy ended. The programme is supported by the European Commission's Directorate-General for the Environment.
"The results of the graduates from training and defence are of very high applied value. The students' research will be included in a brochure designed for municipal councilors, district mayors and the administration of Varna. A meeting with representatives of business, professional chambers and local authorities is to be organized, where the graduates will present their research, results and recommendations," said Prof. Anna Nedyalkova, D.Sc. - Chairperson of the Examination Committee and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar”.


The first class of students was formed at the discretion of the Municipal Council of Varna and included experts from the municipal and district administrations in the city, who are directly involved in environmental protection. Some of the students had the opportunity to participate in the work of the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental and Water Protection, at the invitation of its Chairperson Ivelina Vasileva. The master's degree programme also included placement in a real environment. The training aims to increase the administrative capacity in the transition from linear to circular economy.

Bilyana Todorova - Head of Ecological Control Sector at Varna Municipality, defended her diploma thesis entitled “Economics of Waste Management”. The examination committee assessed her work as excellent and invited her to develop it in a doctoral dissertation.
"My training in the master’s degree programme in Circular Economy has helped me tremendously to see the waste management in a new way and to find good practices that can be implemented in our municipality," she said after the defence.




With an excellent mark and also with an invitation for a doctoral dissertation, the defence ended also for Vanya Ivanova - Senior Inspector of Construction Control in the Primorski District of Varna Municipality. She proposes the introduction of the "Sea Bins" technology for the collection of plastic waste from the Black Sea and the establishment of a factory for processing polyester textiles, objects and accessories for schools.





The programme in Circular Economy is suitable for the preparation and training of students, managers and experts with professional interests and responsibilities in the field of ecology, resource efficiency and sustainable development of the regions. It turns Varna Free University into a leading centre for science and research in the field of non-waste production and transformation of waste into energy and raw materials.
