CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES DEPARTMENT
PROFESSIONAL AREA: ARCHITECTURE, CIVIL ENGINEERING AND GEODESY
Programme: Fire Safety and Population Protection
Awarded qualification: Engineerin Fire Safety and Population Protection
Level of qualification: Bachelor
Length of programme: 4 years (8 semesters)
Number of credits: 240
Field(s) of study (ISCED-F): 1032: Protection of persons and property (861)
Specific admission requirements: Diploma for completed secondary or higher education in Bulgarian or foreign educational institutions. Entry is based on admission exams.
Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning:
Qualification requirements and regulations, including graduation requirements: To acquire a degree of "Bachelor" are required 240 credits, of which 182 credits from compulsory courses, 32 credits of electives, 16 credits of optional courses and 10 credits from diploma project defence. A requirement for acquiring professional qualification is the development and defence of the diploma project - a comprehensive synthesis of knowledge and aptitude for the practical work of the future engineer. The topics for the diploma project are related to real problems in fire-protection activity. Much of the developments are afterwards implemented in practice. Only those students, who have successfully completed their training semesters and all exams from the curriculum, shall be allowed to elaborate a diploma projects. Diploma project defence takes place in front of the State Board of Examiners and is a final exam, which is the basis for the acquisition of the Bachelor degree.
Profile of the programme: The training in programme "Fire Safety and Population Protection" aims to train specialists with extensive knowledge in both fundamental engineering disciplines and in specific disciplines in the field of fire safety design, fire fighting and emergency equipment, emergency actions, fire resistance etc. Training is according to a curriculum, that reflects the experience of leading universities in the country and abroad, and which carries out the idea of widespread knowledge among the future engineers. Students acquire knowledge in integrated engineering and fire safety and population protection. Special attention is paid to the design, operation and expert evaluation of residential, public and industrial buildings and facilities, according to their fire safety. The work placements and internships, set in the curriculum, and taking place in Bulgarian and foreign companies, enterprises and laboratories guarantee the high level of practical training of students. The Bachelor programme Fire Safety and Population Protection has national accreditation. Graduates can obtain a license in accordance with the requirements of the Chamber of engineers in the investment design.
Programme learning outcomes: Graduates in programme Fire Safety and Population Protection will have knowledge and skills in:
The acquired knowledge and skills can be applied in solving problems in the field of fire safety, fire-proof design, fire extinguishing, fire alarm and rescue operations in buildings, sites and facilities; as well as to express conclusions on issues in the area of fire safety of building structures.

*In Varna Free University a credit equals 30 lessons, of which 10 contact hours (lectures and seminars) and 20 hours independent work.
Mode of study: Full time/Part-time
Examination regulations and grading scale: The specialty curriculum includes courses from different scientific fields, which fulfils the requirement of interdisciplinary and wide spectrum training. This defines the various requirements in assessing students' knowledge. Detailed description of methods and assessment criteria for each discipline and the opportunity to inform the reasons for evaluation are given in the syllabi.
Obligatory or optional mobility windows: Students are given the opportunity to participate in students' mobility programmes of Varna Free University
Work placement(s): In the curriculum of some of the special disciplines practices are provided that take place in Bulgarian and foreign companies and laboratories working in the area of fire-protection design and operation.
Work-based learning: In the curriculum of the Bachelors' program in all special subjects the developing of course projects and tasks is provided. The topics of the course projects, as well as these of the diploma projects are taken from actual construction topics. Many of the developments are later implemented in practice.
Occupational profiles of graduates - graduates can be employed as design specialists of the Fire Safety part of buildings and facilities, as engineering staff in companies' fire safety and rescue services, in SA Civil Protection, in the Ministries of Defence and Interior, as well as in the National service of Fire Safety and Population Protection, in supervisory companies etc.
Access to further training: Each successfully completed the training in the Bachelor degree has the necessary skills to continue his/her education at a higher level of qualification - Master degree in programme "Anti-fire Techniques and Automation". After acquiring the Master degree student can apply for further training and research in the doctoral programme "Labour safety and Anti-fire Techniques".
