Admissions requirements:
Completed secondary education.
Those students who have completed vocational schools and classes of choreography apply for the major with their diploma grades in choreography without taking an entrance examination. The rest take a practical examination.
The practical examination includes: performance of two dances chosen from the indicated genres: classical dance, Latin-American dance, variety dance, jazz dance, Street Dance, contemporary dance. Duration of the dance: minimum - 1.5 minutes, maximum - 3 minutes.
Specific arrangements for recognition of prior studies:
• the procedure for recognition of credits is based on the submitted documents:
- Diploma of prior studies;
- International diplomas and certificates of proficiency in a foreign language (English - Cambridge FCE, TOEFEL; German - Zertifikat Deutsch, Sprahdiplom, Zweite Stufe; Russian - TРKИ, French - DELF; Spanish - DELE);
- international diplomas and computer skills certificates consistent with the ECDL (The European Computer Driving Licence).
- Certification of knowledge and skills by sitting examinations in: foreign language at the Foreign Language Teaching Department; computer skills at the Department of Informatics; specific knowledge and skills for the professional field of the professional area of Music and Dance Art. Two diploma grades are recognized for candidate students who have graduated from specialized classes and art schools with profiles of Bulgarian Dance or Choreography: Ethnography and Bulgarian Dance, Bulgarian Exercise, Fundamentals of classical dance – Exercise.
• awarding credits: The Department of Arts awards adequate for the curriculum credits of the major based on the results of the certification of knowledge and skills.
Requirements and rules for qualification*:
240 credits are required to obtain the educational-and-qualification degree Bachelor and the professional qualification Choreographer-Pedagogue. 182 credits are from compulsory courses, 36 credits – from elective courses, 12 credits – from optional courses and 10 – from a pre-graduation teaching placement and defence of diploma thesis.
Profile of the major:
The qualification provides a wide range of theoretical, pedagogical, creative and practical special disciplines that are systemized in compulsory, elective and optional courses.
The compulsory courses provide knowledge and skills in the field of choreographic composition and directing of contemporary and variety dance, jazz dance and hip hop, Martha Graham style, ethnography, classical dance, music theory disciplines, pedagogical disciplines. The elective and optional courses provide specialized and additional training for students according to their interests - Modern and Jazz Dance, Sports and Ballroom Dance, History Of Art, Classical Dance, Dance Techniques, Language Culture, Bulgarian Dance and Music Folklore, etc. The training includes lectures, self-study, individual work with the lecturer, projects, coursework and diploma thesis, placement in artistic teams, staging work in a training team (academic dance theatre), in professional and amateur groups, participation in expeditions, research.
Key learning outcomes:
Students obtain knowledge and competences in:
- Structural and directorial skills to create stage dance works;
- Directing performances and mass events;
- Mastered methods of teaching and creative work with different age groups;
- Ability to carry out research and scientific work;
- Knowledge of costume;
- Knowledge in the field of musical styles and genres;
- Ability to work with people (communication skills).

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:
The curriculum provides for written and practical examinations. The artistic courses end with project assignments. They are assessed according to the ESTC.
Students finish their studies with defence of diploma thesis: Composition and staging of dance in one of the three forms - plot, themed, plot - themed dance. The dance is performed live or recorded before the State Examination Commission.

Apprenticeship programmes: Students are required to undertake a compulsory pre-graduation teaching placement.
Professional profile of the graduates:
Highly qualified specialists are prepared in this major for the following fields:
- Artistic directors of professional and amateur ensembles, choreographers in professional artistic institutes and ballet-masters in ballet theatres and troupes.
- Teachers in secondary art schools with specialized classes in choreography; at children's and youth schools, community centres, centres for work with children and others.
- Training of staff to work in the entertainment sector of tourism, variety and show programmes, electronic media and others.
Access to further studies:
The graduates can continue their studies in Master's degree programme in Choreography Directing, Performing Arts, Management and Production or other Master’s degree programs.
