About VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar"

Varna Free University is actively working on the theme of "Smart Cities"

The theme concerning smart cities is the basis of various initiatives, programs and projects that Varna Free University has been working on over the past few years.

The lecturers at VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" will train those interested in using social networks to promote Varna as a tourist destination. The contract between the Municipality of Varna and the university under the project "Interactive Cities: Effective City Management through Digital Instruments, Social Media and Consumer-Generated Content" was signed on 30 August. Along with the training of representatives of public administration, tourist business and cultural institutions to use social networks to acquire practical skills in digital marketing, the Department of Informatics and Economics will also carry out a study to open new perspectives and upgrade the capacity of the branch organizations in the sphere of tourism.

Another project under which Varna Free University is working on in partnership with ICT Cluster - Varna is "Open Data for Smart Cities". Within the project, students from different professional areas such as architecture, design and computer science will work with mentors and experts. They will assist the implementation of four main activities:

- Creation of an open database on the site of the Municipality of Varna with information about the immovable cultural property and other famous buildings on the territory of the city. On the basis of this data an interactive map of the described sites will be created as an illustration of the possibilities for their use;

- Organizing OPEN DATA Seminar for secondary school and university students on the essence and use of open data, data storage and data access technologies, and on the possibilities for open-data application developments for smart cities;

- National Data Retrieval Competition for secondary school and university students across the country, which will include a problem of the region that will be given as a specific challenge to the participants to resolve;

- Creating architectural projects for revitalization and for building facades;

"Smart Cities" is also called the team with which the student of Varna Free University, Georgi Spasov, majoring in Informatics and Computer Science is qualified to participate in the ESA App Camp, which will take place from 11 to 18 September in the Italian town of Frascati.

Within the framework of the event, the teams will develop mobile applications using NASA satellite data and will offer solutions in the field of intelligent cities, crisis situation management, related to disasters and accidents, agriculture, energy, transport, logistics, construction, aeronautics, health and mobile communications.
