Psychology students of Varna Free University are working with cancer patients and their relatives

At the initiative of the World Health Organization every year on 4 February we celebrate World Cancer Day.

The aim is to raise public awareness to the dangerous disease which is one of the main factors causing deathworldwide. From 2016 to 2018 the motto of the initiatives related to the fight against the disease of the 21st century is "We can, I can."

For Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Cancer, Dr. Marko A. Markov – Varna EOOD, year 2017 will pass under the banner of psychosocial support for cancer patients and their relatives.

The unique programme of the hospital started in the autumn of last year to prove that with joint efforts – of the public, professionals and each patient or a relative of theirs, the acceptance and passage through the disease may be less difficult and painful.

Psychologystudents ofVarna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" have been training to work with cancer patients since the beginning of February. Within three months every day for 4 hours students will perform initial screening in the cancer committees and subsequent testing for levels of anxiety and inclination to depression of patients in the wards of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

This year the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Cancer - Varna will start training of medical and non-medical staff, as well as training of social workers to provide psychosocial support to cancer patients and their relatives.

For more than 10 years the Municipal Oncology Hospital has been conducting campaigns for free preventive checkups. True to tradition, in 2017 again, priority for the specialists of the hospital will be the prevention of oncological diseases with the greatest frequency - breast cancer, cancer of the female reproductive organs, prostate cancer, colon cancer and skin cancer.

The World Cancer Day has been observed since 2000 to remind at least once a year people worldwide to be careful and not to miss their preventive check-ups, because the best chances for a complete cure of cancer are when it is caught at an early stage. The date was chosen with the signing of the Charter of Paris after the World Conference on Cancer on 4 February, 2000.
