9 towers and 11 bridges made out of 15 kg of spaghetti at VARNA SPAGHETTI ENGENEERING – 2016 Competition

20 teams took part in the fourth National VARNASPAGHETTIENGENEERING- 2016 Competition. 9 of the teams involved students from vocational schools in construction, architecture and geodesy from around the country, and 11 teams included students majoring in Construction of Buildings and Structures  and  Architecture of Varna Free University. Two of the university student teams were composed of foreign students from Slovenia, Poland, Spain and Kazakhstan, studying under the Erasmus + at the Faculty of Architecture of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar".

On behalf of the academic management, Prof. Pavel Pavlov, PhD, Vice–Rector for Scientific Research, greeted the participants in the competition.

The secondary school teams had 400 grams of spaghetti available to indulge in imagination and to build a structure of spaghetti and other regulated materials with rotating parts conforming to the rules and evaluation criteria: complexity, height, economy and dynamic loads.

This year the task of the students was complicated in comparison with the previous editions of the competition. They had to build an attractive and stable bridge to span 40 cm, with moving parts and .... made out of spaghetti.

The prestigious jury of VARNA SPAGHETTI ENGENEERING - 2016 was chaired by Arch. Victor Buzev - chief architect of Varna Municipality. Its members were Eng. Hristo Dimitrov - President of theConstruction Chamber in Bulgaria, regional administration –Varna, Eng. Svetlana Nikolcheva - Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Engineers in the Investment Design, Sofia, Galin Kolev - Representative of the Building Chemistry – Bulgaria Company, Eng. Marina Georgieva from the Bulgarian Council for Sustainable Development, Corr.Mem.Prof. Atanas Kovachev, D.Sc. – Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” and Assoc. Prof. Eng. Daria Mihaleva, PhD - lecturer at the Department of Construction of Buildings and Structures.

The structures with rotating parts were assessed with maximum points for complexity. To get full marks for economy they had to be built with minimum materials. Last but not least was the criterion of sustainability. Each of the structures was tested for dynamic loads by simulating the conditions of seismicity.

The highest tower of spaghetti which met all requirements was built by Ustrem team of the professional School of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Plovdiv. The height of their tower was 209 cm.

Second ranked Skyscraper-1 team from Vocational School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy "Hristo Botev" - Sofia and Varna team "Black window" of Vocational School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy "Vasil Levski", town Varna ranked third.

With a special award, presented by the Chamber of Construction, regional administration - Varna was distinguished the team of Vocational School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy, town of Shumen.
