About VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar"

On the road to inspiration and humanity

Internship program 2016 of the Master’s degree students in PR of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" - 13-16 June, 2016.     For another consecutive year VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" provided with the opportunity to carry out an internship program the students of Master’s degree program of Advertising and Public Relations in Business Management and Marketing and Public Relations in Education, Science and Culture.

From 13 to 16 June, 2016 in Sofia, we, the students hold meetings and discussions with representatives of state institutions, national media and the heads of their PR departments.

We were introduced to the the press offices of the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers, the Presidency of the Republic of Bulgaria, Bulgarian Industrial Association.

The PR experts of the state institutions told us about the nature of their work and showed usround the most emblematic places and rooms where the matters of state are decided. Each institution has a visually established profile, so it was really exciting to go into the Red Room of the Presidency, which is the place for informal meetings and from there a lot of interviews are broadcast in the media. It was interesting for us to take a look and to sit on the sofa in the Green Room where the private meetings between the president and his high-ranking guests are held.We saw what the plenary hall looks like and where the special place for journalists is. The visit to the Bulgarian National Television was extremely interesting. The heads of the departments of Marketing and Sales and the unit of Self-Advertisement told us about the nature of their work and the most recent changes that have occurred in the last year. Thanks to the excellent collaboration of the three departments, the media makes a tangible step forward in its development.

In the BNT studio we were introduced to the work of the PR expert, head of Public Communications at the Bulgarian National Television - Radostin Marinov, who explained the highlights of the policy of the media in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. Ekaterina Genova, the Director of the BNT World and Regions Directorate, joined the discussion and spoke about what has been done at the BNT on her initiative as well as about her personal experience in television from her first step until today.

During the internship, we had the honour and pleasure to meet some remarkable personalities from the academic community. The meeting with Prof. Boryana Hristova was held at the building of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, and the lecture was on Management Culture. Prof. Boryana Hristova is a longtime director of the National Library, a specialist in manuscript written heritage, with particular in-depth knowledge and interest in the apocryphal letter and forbidden knowledge. Prof. Boryana Hristova is one of the 14 people in the world included in the Committee of the Memory of the World UNESCO project - a program that aims to identify and preserve the world's written heritage. It was a priceless meeting with a charismatic lady who not only taught but rather infected us with her love for theatre, art, culture and the natural spiritual need for books. We parted with the thought and the idea of the library as a new modern social institution of the future where we all would spend more enjoyable time together.

The subsequent meetings were no less exciting. Once in the past a residence of Todor Zhivkov, today the imposing building of the National History Museum welcomed us for our interviews with Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov and Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov. The lectures were on Media and Building Public Support and Mythologisation of Scientific and Historical Realities – topical issues with broad resonance and continuation in the upcoming meetings at the university.     We learned invaluable PR lessons and heard about her experience form Ani Alashka – Head of the PR department of the Bulgarian Industrial Association - an institution that annually welcomes interns and gives them the opportunity for the first steps in a real working environment. And one of the things that you can realize here is the maxim: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear," said smiling Anie Alashka.

And right away it occurs to me about the PR team of the president - young people, about 30, with all experience required and academic background, dedication, enthusiasm and belief in the moral foundations of the institution. As I was listening to them, I was thinking – it reflects credit on the president to employ these young people to work at the highest state body of our country. You can learn a lot about a person by the decisions which he takes and the people he trusts.  In order to be able to read between the lines is an ability or talent of varying degrees, but it always keeps you one step ahead.

To be behind the scenes and to be absorbed into the working environment of these several top state institutions, to breathe the air and dust from the other side of the curtain, to feel the inspiration and motivation of the people who run the state machinery on a daily basis – it is a unique experience and evaluation. Sometimes questions arise, sometimes we are lost in thought of how much work and sleepless nights stay behind the seemingly small situations and events that we see in the media, in life, every day. Every day we are participants, spectators, passive or active observers in a perfectly organized scenario of individuals, institutions, organizations, like-minded or opposition. Everything is a game but not quite. Everything is a struggle but not quite. Morality is important but not always. How and whether?! We wanted to check it closely. We had this chance. We met them.

And we should not forget that once these people were like us today and they began from here – from the university.  Therefore, I am glad to share about our meeting at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication of Sofia University, where we were welcomed by Prof. Hristo Kaftandzhiev, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Doctor of Science. During his lecture, again we encountered face to face with archetypes in communication. We examined for the purposes of training different advertising spots and perhaps each of us saw under a magnifying glass himself/herself, realizing that we are all subject to emotions regardless whether we personally orchestrate scenarios or we are just consumers.

Today, I know that the most powerful and successful advertising is one in which you see, hear, meet the most sincere, even oppressed human emotions. This is the subconscious, the inner belief and faith that you see yourself. Inside of you – there is no error or manipulation. When the self recognizes itself, the mission is accomplished. And there's nothing wrong with that.

There are so many opportunities for contemplation, lessons, quests and findings for all of us who were a part of the internship program of Varna Free University "Cherorizets Hrabar". Today we are the students majoring in the Master’s degree programs of Advertising and Public Relations in Business Management and Marketing and Public Relations in Education, Science and Culture.     Some of us have already found their vocation, others perhaps will make a sharp turn, but everyone has to find their right place and to meet the inspirers and mentors along the way. A way that leads to the clicking of the right lock that will open exactly your door.

If I had to put it simply, I would justquote Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: "If you want to build a ship, do not start getting people to collect boards, to allocate work, to give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea. " And we are already there!

The internship in Sofia was a unique experience filled with unforgettable emotions. The well  prepared introductory program included study visits to state institutions and lectures by experts in the field of public relations. My colleagues and I had a unique opportunity to be introduced to the peculiarities and subtleties of our future profession by highly qualified professionals. I am glad that I had the opportunity to visit state institutions and to be familiarized with their work. It was very interesting to find out how each institution maintains its image. I would like to thank the Head of the Master’s degree program, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Kalaglarski and Ms Pavleta Krasteva for the unforgettable experience and good organization.

The internship gave us the unique opportunity to familiarize live with the structure, organization and operation of the PR departments of the top state institutions which operate in the political, economic and cultural life of the country. The discussed issues and topics were predominantly practical, which allowed us to feel the daily round of the PR specialist, the usual problems that they encounter as well as the severity of the responsibilities they bear.

Nikolai Kralchev

In short - the internship was a very interesting experience for me. It was well organized and eventful. I am glad that we were able to talk with PR specialists who advise political leaders and to find out what one of their working days is like.

All of the lectures were very interesting and I am glad that we had them.

If I could repeat, I would like to spend a day, at least one day, in one of the institutions to become more familiar with the process of their work. :) Flora Dyulgerian

The meetings with PR professional in different structures of national importance showed me how diverse and dynamic is the job of the PR specialist. I had the opportunity to visit historical and culturally significant sites of our country, to attend lectures by experienced professionals in the field of culture and history. The past days showed how big should be the spectrum of knowledge and skills of a good PR specialist and how important are the contacts in the activities of the PR specialist. Velina Dimova

The internship exceeded my expectations. I found the possibility to meet specialists of the PR departments and press centres inspiring and motivating. The only disadvantage was the short time we had. If I had to assess the internship, I would give excellent mark.

Silvia Ivanova

The internship passed in remarkable succession in the period from 13/06/2016 to 16/06/2016 in Sofia under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. G. Kalaglarski, PhD. At the end of the internship, the Master’s degree students had already had an idea how to do PR in different situations. We had the opportunity to meet people who have proven themselves in their scientific and professional field. Silva Yordanova
