International Business Conference "Science and Business for Smart Future" started

The beginning of the International Business Conference "Science and Business for Smart Future" was given by the Rector of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" Prof. D.Sc. Galya Gercheva.

“In its 25-year-old history we have been convinced that we cannot successfully enter modern times alone, without our partners. So now here you are - our partners from science and business. We are also here and we would like to talk about our smart future”, said Prof. Gercheva.



“I believe that the conference will create a lot of new sustainable partnerships” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eleonora Tankova - Dean of the Faculty of International Economics and Administration, organizer of the event, said.


More than 100 representatives of business, state and local administration, NGOs, students and teachers from universities from across the country take part in the innovative forum, the successor of the scientific conference "Informatics in Scientific Knowledge". Special guests of the conference are Prof. Dr. George Vredeveld, from the University of Cincinnati, the USA; Prof. Dr. Richard MacDonald from the University "St. Cloud", Prof. Jordan Gorchev - President of the International Slavic University "Gavrilo Derzhavin" in the town of Sveti Nikola, Macedonia, the Deputy Regional Governor of Varna region Christian Bogoyev, the MP and a graduate of Varna Free University Pavel Hristov and Ms. Elena Kenarova from the Department of Education and Youth Activities in Varna Municipality.

Co-organizers of the event are the Bulgarian Association of Software Companies (BASSCOM), The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Institute for Economic Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Union of Journalists in Bulgaria and the Institute of Software Engineering - Center Bulgaria. Media partner of the conference is the "Human Resources" magazine.

“To have smart future, we need to build a large community in which to communicate with each other”, said the longtime partner and Doctor Honoris Causa of Varna Free University Prof. George Vredeveld. “I think that building communities is natural, although sometimes people tend to turn communities into isolated islands. This conference, however, is different - we have representatives of the state, private sector, academic institutions, representatives of different countries and that kind of cooperation leads to smart future. I congratulate Varna Free University for organizing this event”, Prof. Vredeveld added.

 “What I would like for the future is the universities to become real development centers from which new business, new economy can generate”, Dimitar Gyulev - a member of the Management Board of BASSCOM pointed out.

In the first part of the conference Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eleonora Tankova presented the new educational model of Varna Free University. She emphasized the role of flexible educational approaches to develop new sustainable skills in young people.

The participants in the forum got acquainted with the new educational platform Smart Future - the project, which won the Varna award in the field of social sciences.

 “The role of the university is to develop not only knowledge, skills, competencies and creativity, but also critical assessment and this is one of the objectives of this platform”, said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Galina Momcheva - Head of Department "Economics and Informatics" and part of the team that developed the platform.

At the end of the first panel Dr. Vesselina Spasova presented the project "Center for competence in the field of creative and recreational industry", developed by a team of Varna Free University in partnership with companies from the IT-sector and the tourism sector and the Regional Library "Pencho Slaveykov" .

The programme on the first day of the conference also included two panel discussions: "Technology - the driving force of smart specialization" moderated by Assoc. Prof. Galina Momcheva and speaker Dimitar Gyulev and "Business, Administration and Policy for Smart Growth" moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Magdalina Ivanova.

The conference continues with a poster and Networking sessions.

Tomorrow the programme of the forum continues with the panel discussion "Media, Education and Business" with a moderator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgi Kalaglarsky and speakers: Snezana Todorova - Acting president of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists, Prof. D. Sc. Milko Petrov - President of the Editorial Council of New media 21 and Marietta Bobeva - Manager of Regional Television Center – Varna and master class "Finance and behavioral economics" with speakers Prof. Dr. George Vredeveld, Prof. Dr. Richard MacDonald, Prof. D.Sc. Dimitar Kanev - VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar", Martin Paev - Chairman, SORTIS GROUP and Yavor Achev - Manager for Bulgaria at Pioneer Investments.
