About VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar"

June 6, the International Day of the Russian language was celebrated at Varna Free University

The events were attended by students and lecturers, teachers of Russian language from secondary school in Varna and the region, from Veliko Tarnovo, Shumen, Dulovo and Plovdiv, as well as university teachers in Russian from the Medical University - Varna and the Shumen University.

The methodological seminar "Specifics of teaching and studying Russian language in a foreign school" was run by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tatyana Korepanova, deputy director of the Center for Language Certification at the Institute of Russian Language “A.S. Pushkin” /Moscow, Russia/. The most effective methods in teaching Russian to school-age children were discussed. The lecturer spoke about how games can be used and applied in the classroom. Especially valuable were the interesting examples from the lecturer’s practice concerning complicated issues of Russian grammar. All participants in the seminar were awarded certificates.




An exhibition of books, donated by "The House of Russians Abroad" to Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” was opened on the same day. The books were catalogued by the University Library staff.

All guests were welcomed at the entrance of the library by the folklore ensemble of the village of Kazashko and greeted with famous Russian songs.

The exhibition was opened by the vice-rector for scientific research Prof. Dr. Pavel Pavlov and the Director of the Russian Center at VFU Prof. Dr. Galina Shamonina.

The ceremony was attended by the vice-president of VFU Mr. Yani Yanev, the vice-rector for scientific research Prof. Dr. Pavel Pavlov, the vice-rector for Educational Affairs Prof. Dr. Valery Stoyanov, the Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Peter Hristov, the Dean of the Faculty of International Economics and Administration Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eleonora Tankova, lecturers and students, journalists.

The Consul General of Russia in Varna S.N.Lukyanchuk greeted the audience, noting that he is "particularly pleased to celebrate the Day of the Russian language at Varna Free University - a prestigious educational center, where for many years the traditions of the Russian language, culture and literature have been successfully developed and the University’s  Russian center convincingly and enthusiastically has worked in this area for seven years now, discovering the treasures of the Russian world for the Bulgarian youth. The donation of unique books for the University Library is a precious gift for the Day of the Russian language. "

The coordinator of European projects at "The House of Russians Abroad" Svetlana Romanova presented the organization which donated the books as a unique institution, combining the functions of a museum, archives, library, research, information publishing and cultural center. She defined Varna Free University as one of their leading partners and emphasized that this is the second donation to the university. The first one was in 2007. The new donation of 300 books is specifically for the 25th anniversary of the university.

The exhibition was of great interest for the audience. Everybody leafed through books with pleasure, admiring the new editions in various thematic areas.

The documentary "Embassy on the Tagansky Hill" was shown.

In her address S.V. Romanova said: "I am really struck by the professionalism and emotional and warm attitude, which the people from the Russian Center at VFU showed. From all my soul I wish new interesting projects, many interested students and more success in the popularization and dissemination of the Russian language, literature and culture in Bulgaria. "

On behalf of the University, the vice-rector Prof. Dr. Pavel Pavlov thanked the "House of Russians Abroad" for the donation and expressed confidence that the two organizations will continue their active cooperation.

A letter of gratitude for the unfailing support of the initiatives of the university and the work of its Russian center was handed to the Consul General of Russia in Varna S.N. Lukyanchuk.

The festivities continued with a round table “My profession, my Russian language”. The participants discussed the implementation of innovative technologies and methodologies in teaching Russian, shared their problems and difficulties. Rozalina Dimitrova, a senior teacher from "Geo Milev" secondary school in Varna spoke about the need to be written a textbook in Russian literature for the purpose of teaching Russian as a foreign language in the Bulgarian secondary school. Together the Russian specialists discussed the use of adapted texts, the specifics of the training of bilingual children and many others.


Pushkin day at VFU continued with a concert, lots of smiles and good mood.

"I am really grateful to Varna Free University for the amazingly careful attitude to the Russian language, for the enormous work to promote the Russian language. I am happy that I was able to take part in one of the many seminars held there. I wish them strength and health to continue their work so more teachers can take part in these seminars and meetings. "
