Exhibition of projects from expedition in Nicopolis ad Istrum of students from Master's degree program Conservation of Cultural Heritage of VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar"

VELIKO TARNOVO, 21 MARCH  - 11 APRIL, 2016     Exhibition of projects - result of the academic and scientific expedition of the Master’s degree program Conservation of Cultural Heritage, held in the autumn of 2015, was opened on 21 March , 2016 in the lobby of the Regional Library "P. Slaveykov" in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. The exhibition is entitled Nicopolis ad Istrum. The project are for documentation, graphic reconstruction and socialization of the Roman town and the exhibition is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Varna Free University" Chernorizets Hrabar ".

The projects have been developed by two teams of pre-graduates of the program, led by Assoc. Prof. Krasimira Vacheva, PhD, Arch. and Asst. Prof. Zhechka Ilieva, Arch.. The scientific expedition was aimed at documenting the western part of the square complex and developing projects for anastylosis and socialization of this part of the ancient city. This stage of the training of the Master’s degree students of the Faculty of Architecture prepares them for real teamwork in the field and introduces them to the specifics of protection of the archaeological heritage of Bulgaria.

The project proposals are arranged on more than 20 boards on which are documented various original architectural details and the vision of the authors for their restoration and exhibition on the spot. The exhibition also presents a model of the main city square of Nicopolis ad Istrum made by one team. It enables non-specialists to get an idea of the scale and architectural decoration of the square, the location of the statues and the porticoes throughout the complex. The exhibition revives the most important central part of the urban plan of the town. The model presents some more of the most impressive public buildings, discovered by archaeologists over the years – the odeon or the small musical theatre, the bulevterion, which is actually the building of the city council and the representative entrance to them – the propylaea. One of the most interesting buildings is also included - the thermoperipatos. The building was a commercial centre of Nicopolis ad Istrum with its 28 stores and a large hall for transactions and business meetings. Probably it was depicted on coins minted in the town. The other team of Master’s degree students proposed a project for a souvenir type of ticket and seal as an important element of its project for the socialization of the site. The model and the projects for souvenirs were donated to the museum.

The team of researchers of the ancient town, the people of Veliko Tarnovo and the local government highly appreciated the work of the students of Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". "The most valuable thing in the projects is that the architects seek to preserve the authenticity of the monuments, the atmosphere in the Roman city and all planned modern interventions are very delicate and measured. In this respect the opinions of archaeologists and designers fully coincide, as their only purpose is in Nicopolis ad Istrum to be preserved the authentic Roman structures and this magnificent town to be protected from dummy, ugly and false restorations and reconstructions as lately we see all around us", says Assoc. Prof. Pavlina Vladkova, head of the excavations in the Roman town. She expressed the willingness of the management of the Regional Historical Museum in Veliko Tarnovo to continue the joint work with the students from the Master's degree program Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture at VFU in the coming years.
